EFFLUENT DISCHARGE ASSESSMENTS

An Effluent Discharge License is only issued to companies, industries or facilities that discharge effluents into the environment. The license is only issued when the facility operator confirms that the effluent discharged into the environment is within the required permissible NEMA standards and it has no negative impact on water quality.

This is very essential to manufacturing industries, hotels, oil refineries, petrol and service stations, residential apartments. Operators with an onsite waste water treatment plant.

In Kenya, An EDL is issued by National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), after submission of your facility’s report on effluent, effluent sample analysis results from an accredited NEMA licensed Laboratory.

Environmental Management and Coordination (Water Quality) Regulations, subsidiary regulation of EMCA, CAP 387 of the laws of Kenya, – “every person who generates and discharges effluent into the environment should carry out quarterly effluent quality sample tests which should be tested in a NEMA approved laboratory. The results obtained should be submitted to NEMA and issued with an annual Effluent Discharge License.

The results obtained should assist the facility to comply with the standards set out in the regulations.”

Facility operators that discharge effluents into the environment are supposed to be conduct water effluent sample tests on quarterly basis. This measure is important to ensure prevention and protection of lakes, rivers, streams, springs, wells and other sources of water from pollution. Consequently, these tests are conducted to ensure conformity with the standards set by the regulations.
